Phi Sigma Rho

Our History

Our Values

Phi Sigma Rho is a social sorority for women in engineering and related technical fields. We are dedicated to promoting lifelong bonds of sisterhood along with academic and professional excellence. Phi Rho is everything Greek life has to offer with the flexibility and support for the demanding schedule that comes with being an engineering student. Our primary mission is to re-engineer sorority life.

The Alpha Chapter of Phi Sigma Rho was established at Purdue University by Abby McDonald and Rashmi Khanna in 1984. Due to the demands of their rigorous academic programs, Abby and Rashmi were unable to participate in traditional sorority recruitment. Thus, they sought out to create the first social sorority for women in engineering and technology that would be flexible enough to accommodate for their busy schedules. Since its inception, Phi Sigma Rho has grown in membership with 46 active chapters.

The UC Berkeley chapter otherwise known as the Alpha Theta Chapter was founded in 2015 by Annie Cheng, Rachel Zhang, and Anusha Jain. Our chapter continues to strengthen Science Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) through sisterhood and service to our Cal community.

Encouragement. Our sisterhood cultivates friendship, creating a network of sisters who mentor us and enrich our lives through their unique backgrounds and experiences. Our rituals help us connect with our rich alumni network and other sisters across the various chapters and strengthen our sisterhood even beyond college. To help our sisters succeed in historically male-dominated fields, Phi Rho focuses on providing professional development, assistance, and encouragement to help them achieve their academic and career goals. Our sisters inspire each other in all aspects of life and provide constant support and encouragement to get each other through both their challenges and victories. All in all, we are driven by our commitment to promote shared experiences, academic achievement, and service above self

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Anh Pham (she/her/hers)

Hello! Welcome to our website:)

My name is Anh Pham, and I am so excited to be the president of the Alpha Theta chapter of Phi Sigma Rho here at Cal! I joined Phi Rho my freshman fall semester and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Since I joined in 2020, our recruitment was all online but Phi Rho still managed to make the process really fun and exciting for me. I still remember the feeling I got when I joined our Info Night over Zoom and was instantly welcomed by the actives and potential new members. It made me feel right at home during a time when I was severely homesick and even questioning if Berkeley was the right choice for me.

Ever since then, I’ve made so many lifelong friends and mentors who I am eternally grateful for. Phi Rho has given me the best study partners, roadtripping buddies, and comfort people that I coud’ve ever asked for. I’ve met so many incredible people who continue to inspire me to get out of my comfort zone, try new things, and pursue my academic, professional, amd personal goals!

Phi Rho has had a huge impact on my college experience, and I can’t imagine life without the great memories and people that this community has given me. I couldn’t be more excited for recruitment and hope to see you there! In the mean time, please continue to explore our website, and feel free to reach out to me if you want to talk or have any questions! You can reach me at president.psr@berkeley.edu

Phi Rho Love,

Anh Pham
